Ontario’s 2021 Sunshine List of public sector employees who earned more than $100,000 in the previous year has been released, with executives from power companies and hospitals among the top earners.
More than 244,000 people on the list earned more than six figures last year, up from around 205,000 in 2020 — a 19% increase.
According to the province, the school boards sector accounted for nearly 95% of the growth. It claims that teachers’ salaries account for 92 percent of the increase.

Kenneth Hartwick, the CEO of Ontario Power Generation, topped the list with a salary of $1,628,246.
Dominique Miniere, an executive vice-president at OPG, made over $1 million, earning $1,523,519 in total. The top four earners on the list were all OPG executives.
Kevin Smith, the president as well as the CEO of the University Health Network, was paid $845,092 and ranked fifth in the province.
Phil Verster, president and CEO of Metrolinx, came in second with $838,960.91.
Matthew Anderson, CEO of Ontario Health, came in seventh place with $826,000 in earnings.
The highest-paid woman on the list is Penny Sutcliffe. Last year, the Medical Officer of Health for Public Health Sudbury and Districts received an annual salary of $800,726.
Catherine Zahn, president and CEO of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health received $650,455.
Doris Greenspun, the Ontario Registered Nurses’ Association CEO, was paid $565,489.68.
On the other hand, Premier Doug Ford was paid $208,974.00 last year. Andrea Horwath, the leader of the Official Opposition, earned $180,885.96.

Meanwhile, Mike Schreiner, the Green Party’s leader, earned $125,874.00. Steven Del Duca, the leader of the Liberal Party, does not have a seat in the legislature and does not hold a position on the list.
James Wallace, Ford’s chief of staff and a former Toronto Sun and Postmedia executive, earned $333,316.90, far more than either leader. Wallace has been in charge since the summer of this year.
Dr. Kieran Moore, the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, was paid $235,314.14 as the province’s top doctor last year. In June of 2021, he was appointed to the position.
Moore has previously served as the Medical Officer of Health for the counties of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox, and Addington. For that role, he was paid $225,708.71.
Dr. David Williams, the province’s former top doctor who oversaw the early stages of the pandemic response in Ontario, earned $351,807.67.
Each of the province’s largest police forces’ chiefs earned more than $300,000.
The chief of the Ontario Provincial Police, Thomas Carrique, earned $354,343.28.
Peter Sloly, the now-retired Ottawa police chief, earned $341,827.43. James Ramer, the Chief of Police of Toronto, earned slightly less at $332,023.59.
Nishan Duraiappah, the police chief of Peel, was paid $327,220.61.
