Police in Ontario advise people to renew their license plates

As more vehicles face costly fines, Ontario police warn drivers to update their license plates.

Key Takeaways:

  • Even though Ontario stopped charging to renew license plates in March, the renewal process is still required.
  • According to Schmidt, the owner must renew their validation because it typically expires on their birthday.
  • A digital reminder tool is now available from the province to send emails, SMS messages, or phone calls 60 and 30 days before expiration.

Even though it’s now free to renew license plates, Ontario police are advising drivers to do so.

Although Ontario did away with the renewal charge for license plates back in March, the renewal procedure is still necessary.

The province claimed that eliminating this fee would save drivers $120 annually.

In a video, OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt cautioned drivers that failing to renew their license plate could result in significant punishment. For failing to do so, several drivers in Ontario have received $500 fines.

“Have you recently celebrated a birthday? Have any birthday cards arrived in the mail for you? The Ministry of Transportation’s letter to renew your VAL tag for your passenger car, light commercial truck, motorcycle, or moped is one thing that you no longer receive in the mail “This week, Schmidt stated.

He continued, you must go online and renew your registration even though it may not cost anything.

Schmidt stated that the owner is responsible for renewing their validation because the expiry usually coincides with their birthday.

“Officers across the province now see more automobiles without the correct registration. For that, you can receive a ticket, “Added he.

The province now offers a digital reminder tool to send emails, SMS, or phone calls 60 and 30 days before expiration.

Drivers in Ontario can update their license plates online, by mail, or at a ServiceOntario site.
